Anthony "Tom" White

Poland - Anthony “Tom” White passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, December 4, 2016. He was born in Youngstown on August 20, 1924, the son of Mary (Williams) and Nicholas White. Tom attended The Rayen School and after graduation he enlisted in the Navy. He proudly served his country during World War II while stationed in the South Pacific. In 1949 he married Florence (Scaperotto) White. Together they operated Western Auto in Canfield for over 35 years. Tom became friends with everyone who walked into his store. Throughout the years generations of families returned to “Tom’s Western Auto” to not only buy their Christmas toys and lawn mowers but also to spend some time discussing the “news of the day.” After retiring, Tom continued working for over 15 years as a good will ambassador at Schiavone Funeral Home. Tom is survived by his wife of 67 years, Florence; son Magistrate Richard (Anne Louise) and grandson Brian White of Poland. In addition, he is survived by sisters-in-law Margaret Pecchio, Catherine Scaperotto, and Lenore White; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister; Louise, and brothers; Henry, Richard, and Donald. When his grandson Brian was born fourteen years ago, Tom proudly declared “I am the oldest first-time grandfather in the history of the United States!” There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 11:00am at Holy Family Church in Poland with Monsignor William J. Connell presiding. Friends and family will be received from 9:30 to 11am before the service at the church. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Boardman, OH 44512 or to Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, Poland, OH 44514. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Greenbrier Health Center and to Hospice of the Valley for the care provided to Tom.
