Irene Petrella

January 12, 1927 ~ August 18, 2016 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Youngstown - Irene Petrella 89, passed away after her battle with Acute Myoblast Leukemia surrounded by her family Thurs. Aug. 18, 2016 at her residence. She was born in Barr Township, PA on Jan. 12, 1927, the daughter of Leafy Anderson and Joseph Schlereth . She was a graduate of Barnesboro High School. During World War II she worked in a factory where they made parachutes for the military. Irene came to Youngstown, and graduated from Choffin LPN School of Nursing. Through the years she was employed at North Side Hospital and worked in the nursery, did private duty nursing, and physicals for Biometrics. She was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Parish where she sang in the choir, served on the PTA, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a Camp Fire Leader and enjoyed socializing with her garden club. She also enjoyed Bingo, assembling puzzles, and traveling. When she retired she gave back to the community by volunteering at the Fellowship Garden and Hospice for many years. Irene was preceded in death by her husband; Dominic Petrella of 64 years whom she married July 21, 1950 died June 19, 2015, her parents, her step mother; Lucille Schlereth, brothers; Haley, Eugene, and Clayton Schlereth, and a son; Timothy Petrella. She is survived by her sister; Regina (Tom) Yannella, six children; John (Scott Bishop), Nancy (Dave) Abbott,  Julie Petrella Hoskins, Dominic (Dee Dee) Petrella, Annamarie (Lynn) Minnick, Jim (Kelley) Petrella, nine grandchildren; Brenda Jones, Tina Abbott, Christopher Kostalas, Tony Kostalas, Katie Frank, Matthew Hoskins, Gina Schiavone, Stefanie Schiavone, and James Petrella, four great grandchildren; Alex, Laura, Graham, and Mason, one nephew; Joseph Schlereth, three nieces; Joyce Schlereth Matinko, Patty Trell, and Mary Trell Osman, a great niece; Leslie Becker, a great nephew;  TC Osman Jr., a great great-niece Olivia Becker and great great-nephew; Emmitt Osman. She will be remembered by her whit, humor, and caring ways, but mostly for her thoughtfulness in remembering and sharing each one of her children’s birthdays and anniversaries throughout the years. Friends and family may call 4-6:30pm Aug. 25, 2016 in Schiavone Funeral Home.
