Girard - A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10am Monday, May 16, 2016 in Saint Anthony of Padua Church for Santo A. Putigano, 91 who died Thursday morning in Caprice Health Care Center. “Sandy” was born in Akron on Aug. 17, 1924 to his parents, Louis and Annette Monaco Putigano. He graduated from The Rayen School in 1943 and from Youngstown College Business School in 1948 where he was in the Alpha Sigma Chi Fraternity and an original charter member of the fraternity. From  1943-1946 he  served in the 249th Combat Engineer Battalion, attached to Patton’s Third Army in Europe and received four major battle stars for The Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Germany Campaigns. The 249th was cited by the Belgium Army for gallantry during the Ardennes Campaign. Sandy was a member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge National Chapter in Washington, DC, life member of the V.F.W. Post 419 in Girard, where he served as past post 1st Vice Commander, a life member of the American Legion Dewitt McConnell Post 235 in Girard, where he served as past post service officer, a member of Disabled American Veteran Chapter 11 in Warren and a member of Amvets National Chapter. He worked for the Transportation Department of Liberty Schools for 17 years before transferring to the High School to work as their Custodian and Boiler Operator for 12 years and was a member of the Liberty School Custodial & Transportation Retirees Association. Sandy served as a Third Degree Knight for the Knights of Columbus All Saints Council #5371 in Youngstown and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Liberty Lodge #65. He was a guitar instructor for the Strouss Music Store in Warren for ten years, played in several bands during the 40s, 50s, and 60s in the Youngstown and Warren areas, and was a graduate of the U.S. School of Music for guitar in 1965. He enjoyed the Big Band Sounds Era of music and football, baseball, golf, bowling, and softball which he played in the LL Parker League at Oakland Field during the 40s and 50s. He also played with teams from the Briar Hill Area. Sandy also enjoyed traveling, yard work, and attending his retiree dinners and army unit reunions and was also a member of the AARP and Parkinson’s Group in Youngstown. He is survived by his son; David Putigano, his daughter; Sandra Putigano, and his brother; Robert “Ribby” Putigano. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, the former Louise Sferra, whom he married Aug. 10, 1957 died, Feb. 21, 2004, a brother, Mario James Putigano, and a sister, Viola Franco. Family and friends will gather from 4-7pm Sunday, May 15 and from 9-9:45am on Monday in the Schiavone Funeral Home.
