Sam F. Lavanty, 95, son of Salvatore and Rose Ripoli Lavanty, Lombardo, born Jan. 12, 1923 passed away December 24, 2018. Sam retired from US Steel McDonald Works as a foreman in 1980 after 35 years of employment. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Parish, the St. Anthony Senior Citizens group in Youngstown, and a life long area resident. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Rose Sorrentino Lavanty whom he married Jan. 27, 1945; son, Sam D. (Kathy) Lavanty of North Lima; grandchildren, Amy (Yoav) Levi-Haim of Nevada, Tod (Nicole) Lavanty of Minnesota, and Kim (Mike) Erdel of New York; great grandchildren, Arielle, Lea, and Jacob Levi-Haim, Samantha, Michael, Abigail, Ellie Mae, and Elijah Erdel; and sister, Josephine Ross. Besides his parents and step father, Sam was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Seidita; brothers, John, Henry, Frank, Joe Lavanty, and Ralph Lombardo. Sam enjoyed spending time with his family whenever possible especially on holidays, birthdays, and family reunions. He enjoyed gardening, playing poker, shooting pool, visiting casinos, woodworking, and traveling. He and Rose especially enjoyed visiting Italy and Hawaii and trips to Las Vegas and in his early retirement years, spending the winters in Winter Garden, Florida. Family and friends will gather from 9-11am in St. Anthony Church on Sat. Dec. 29, 2018 followed by a mass of Christian Burial at 11am. The family would like to thank the staff at the Marian Assisted Living Center, Assumption Village and Hospice of the Valley for the loving and thoughtful care given Sam in his time of need. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley in Sam’s memory.
