Andrew Petras, 95
Youngstown – A mass of Christian Burial will be said Fri., Nov. 15, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Sts Cyril and Methodius Church, with the Monsignor Peter M. Polando officiating for Andrew Petras 95, formerly of Mill Run Drive in Liberty Township. Andy was born Dec. 20, 1917 in Filbert, PA. He was the sixth of nine children born to John and Katherine Rerko Petras. He was a carpenter with the Joseph Bucheit & Sons Co., who were general contractors from Oct. 1936 to his retirement date in Dec. 1982. He was a graduate of East High School in 1936, an Army Veteran of WWII (Feb 1942 – Dec. 1945), was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant, and was a member of the Carpenter's Union. He enjoyed gardening, and volunteering at his church with his time and talent as a carpenter, repairing and building many items. He was an avid golfer, being well known at Stambaugh Golf Course. He is survived by his wife, the former Catherine Scherl, whom he married July 25, 1942, a son, John (Fran) Petras; a daughter, Linda McMahon; three grandchildren, Michelle Burnst, Ryan (Lisa) McMahon, and Collin McMahon; five great-grandchildren, Mason, Aubrey and Emma Brunst and Ainslee and Kate McMahon; and a sister, Ann Bassetti. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Frank and Joseph Petras; and five sisters, Margaret Kren, Mary Galich, Veronica Veno, Grace Gentile, and Agnes Sylvester. Family and friends may call on Friday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Schiavone Funeral Home.
