December 16, 1922 — March 1, 2021

Boardman

Anthony J (Tony) Schiavone, 98, passed away at home on March 1st, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.  Tony was born on December 16, 1922 in Brier Hill, Youngstown.  He was a 1941 graduate of the Rayen School and a proud veteran of the US Army, having served in Europe during World War II.

In 1946, he, his wife, his brother Harry, and his sister Rose, along with their spouses, Betty and Frank, opened the Boardman Supermarket at 6315 Market St.  In time, the store grew in volume and size and became one of the first Sparkle Markets in the area.  From there, he formed Mahoning Sparkle Supermarkets Inc. with Tony Santisi and Arthur Cohen.  For years this was the preeminent grocery chain in the Youngstown/Warren area.

Tony was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word.  Always thinking of others before himself and always having a kind word to say, he was truly loved and respected by all who knew him.

Tony leaves behind the love of his life, the former Isabel Manolio, who he married on May 23rd, 1946.  They would have celebrated their 75th anniversary in two months. Also left to cherish his memory are his two children, Daniel P. (Karen Rolfe) and Phyllis Schiavone.  He is also survived by six grandchildren - Anthony(Jamie), Dr. Dana Goldberg (Ryan), Daniel P. Jr. (Stefanie), Jennifer Venrose (Michael), Stephanie, Gina Meenachan (Brennan), as well as twelve great grandchildren.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Donato and Faustina Andreana Schiavone, brothers Joseph, James, Reverend Fredrick Anzevino, Harry Anzevino, and sisters Rose Cifaldi and Anna Schiavone.

Tony was an avid golfer and fisherman, and was also known to have enjoyed going to Las Vegas a time or two.  He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church.

An open mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday March 6 at St. Charles Church Boardman.  A private burial service will follow.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Schiavone Funeral Home.

The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to St. Jude's Childrens' Hospital.  The family would also like to thank Dr. Alex Vrabel for his skilled care and unwavering friendship and dedication to Tony.
