CHARLES WILLIAM PHILLIPS

Charles William Phillips of Austintown, Ohio passed away Sunday morning, May 25, 2014, at his home.  Charles was born on February 4, 1933 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Elizabeth "Effie" Conway Phillips and John Cecil Phillips.  He married Ida Iandimarino Delmonte, who survives him, on October 30, 1965.  Charles and Ida's marriage was a beautiful example of love and family, not only for their children and grandchildren, but for all who met them. Charles graduated from Chaney High School, and then joined the United States Marine Corps.  He graduated from boot camp on August 21, 1952 in Paris Island, South Carolina as a member of the 5th Recruit Battalion.  He served in the Korean War.  While in Korea, Charles served on the USS Cabot transporting North Korean POWs from the Korean Peninsula to Taiwan.
After his military service, Charles worked at U.S. Steel.  He then went on to own and operate DelMonaco's Pizza Shop.  Charles worked at the GM Lordstown Fabrication Plant from 1972 until his retirement in 1995.  During his retirement, Charles worked as a courier for both ClinLab and Quest Diagnostics.
Charles was a member of the VFW.  He was also a member of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, where he, alongside his wife, Ida, volunteered faithfully and tirelessly for many years making Brier Hill pizzas every Friday, at times arriving as early as 2:30 a.m. to make the pizza dough, as well as making Easter bread during Lent and Holy Week.
Charles also enjoyed woodworking.  He made numerous, beautiful, wood pieces which have been, and will continue to be, enjoyed by countless family members and friends.
Above all else, the most important thing to Charles was his family.  He enjoyed traveling with them.  Charles was at his happiest when Ida and he were together with all of their children and grandchildren.  He especially found absolute joy in every moment spent with his grandchildren – from babysitting them, watching them at their sporting events and school activities, and just spending time talking with them and making them laugh.
In addition to Ida, Charles leaves to cherish his memory, his sister, Margaret "Peggy" Carson; sisters-in-law, Carmela Lemme and Joanie Iandimarino; children, Denise (Bob) Cogar, Teresa Drummond, Charles (Claudia) Phillips, David (Liz) Phillips, and Linda (Brian) Cristall; and, grandchildren:  Dominic and Dyana Drummond along with their father, Al; Alex, Amy, Jensen and Nicolas Phillips; and, Michael, Mark and Jack Phillips.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Joann Csepeggi.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial for Charles at St. Anthony of Padua Church located at 1125 Turin Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44510 on Thursday, May 29 at 11:00 a.m.  Friends may call at Schiavone Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday May 29.

**Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.  May his soul, and the souls of all of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen*
