AUSTINTOWN "Together again, dancing cheek to cheek." A funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2013, at St.Edward Church for Elsie A. Gwynn, 96, formerly of Liberty, who passed away peacefully Monday, April 22, 2013, at Briarfield at Ashley Circle in Austintown, with her daughter at her side.
Elsie was born Aug. 28, 1916, in Bakerton, Pa., the daughter of Engel and Amelia (Mattee) Rose.
She received formal training to play the violin at an early age (often being referred to as "The Midget Violinist") after performing on stage at the age of 5. She then joined her four sisters and father to form the Rose Family Orchestra, which was managed by their father and played at various venues. She was also skilled at playing the piano and was often called upon to play at various events, including commencements.
After her marriage to William "Bill" Gwynn on Feb. 22, 1941, Elsie came to Youngstown, where she made her home. She and her husband met on a dance floor and "danced" their way through 68 years of marriage before his passing March 12, 2009.
Elsie was employed at Camp Reynolds, Railway Express, and United Vacuum in her early years. In later years, she was employed by Woolco and Jewel Mart. She will be remembered for her musical talents and love of music, her quick wit, and her love of people, shopping, and chocolate!
Elsie leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Christine Tomko and her son-in-law, Timothy Tomko, who was like a son to her. They are both of Liberty. She leaves three grandsons, whom she dearly loved, Dr. Matthew Tomko of Columbus, Lucas Tomko of Madison, Wis. and Jonathan Tomko. She also leaves a sister, Matilda Harnett of Meadville, Pa., and will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews who were dear to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her sisters, Liz Dongilla, Mary Lees, Anne Stoltz, and Josephine Fresh.
Elsie cherished her relatives, many friends, neighbors, and caregivers and will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Briarfield at Ashley Circle for their loving and compassionate care through the years, especially those who "went the extra mile" for her.
Friends will be received today, April 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday, April 29, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Schiavone Funeral Home.
