Fred L. Deluca Sr.

Fred L. DeLuca Sr. 96, passed away peacefully, on Thursday, April 14, 2022 ( at Caprice Health Care Center) surrounded by his family, after a long and full life. Fred was born on November 7, 1925, the son of Anthony L. and Teresa D'Alitto DeLuca, and was a life long resident of Liberty. Fred served in the U. S. Navy during WWII on the Destroyer Escort USS Sturtevant (DE 239). He served as an Italian interpreter between his Captain and the Captain of an Italian submarine. He was very proud of his service and would often boast of having "sailed the seven seas!" Fred retired as a foreman from the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, later Conrail, where he was a master plumber. Fred loved visiting the casino's and playing poker. He was a very good card player, able to count cards. Fred was married to the love of his life, the former Betty M. (Smith) DeLuca for 67 years, until her passing in 2013. Fred was always proud of his three sons, Anthony (Tony) L. (Donna): William (Bill) E., and Fred L. Jr., all of Youngstown. Five grandchildren: Fred L. (Melanie); Elizabeth A. DeLuca Porter (Christopher); Daniel (Amie); Edward Jon; all from the Youngstown area, and Lauren A. of Irving Texas. Fred also leaves five great grandchildren, Anthony L.; Adalynn; Francesca; Luciano "Louis"; and Logan;  sister, Mary Potesta; sister-in-law; Irma DeLuca; brother-in-law, Anthony Cocca Sr.; and many loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his siblings, Louis DeLuca; Yolanda (DeLuca) Cocca; Frank DeLuca, Anthony (Tony) L. DeLuca; Stella (DeLuca) Bernard; Concetta (Connie) (DeLuca) Pachell; three brother-in-laws, Dominic Bernard; Eugene Potesta and Richard Pachell; his sister-in-law Sophia DeLuca;  nephews, Anthony L. DeLuca and Nick Pachell;  and his daughter-in-law Virginia (Fabiny) DeLuca. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Wednesday, April 20th, 11:00am, at St. Edward's Catholic Church. Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Siffrin will officiate. Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 19th from 4pm - 6pm at the funeral home and again one hour before mass on Wednesday, 10:00am - 11:00am at the church. The family would like to, first of all, thank Fred's "Elmwood family" where Fred made his home for the past six years, for all of the devotion, friendship, love and compassion the staff there has shown Fred and the entire family. Fred was so proud of the fact that he was the most senior resident there. They would also like to thank Caprice Health Care Center; Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Siffrin; Dr. Louis Volino; and Fred's nephew, Dr. Eugene Potesta. These people are very special and have given great comfort to Fred and his family.
