James Battafarano, 90
Youngstown – James Battafarano, 90 passed away at Hospice House on November 22, 2013. Jim was born August 12, 1923 in Youngstown, Ohio to Philip and Antoinette Battafarano.
In 1942, he dutifully served his country as a member of the 164th Army Infantry in the Pacific Theater. He was grateful for the lifelong friendships made in that turmoil, especially his buddy Mike Beatini of Montvale, New Jersey.
Upon his return from military service, Jim attended Youngstown College where he was second seed on the College's tennis team. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and was licensed as a Professional Mechanical Engineer.
It was during those college years that he met his "cara mia" Anita Criscione whom he married December 27, 1952. Together they had three children; Marianne (Lawrence) Hocking, James (Katherine), and Stephen (Deborah). Jim was a lifelong member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church where he served on Parish Council for 25 years. He was a lover of classical music, opera, and was an avid tennis player and golfer most all of his life. Jim was a member of Mahoning County Professional Engineers, Knights of Columbus, served as a Liberty Township Democratic Precinct Committeeman, Zoning Commission and was a founding member of the Liberty Professional Businessmen's Association.
Jim is survived by his wife; Anita, sister; Phyllis Battafarano, sister-in-law; Virginia (John) Criscione- Janacone, brother-in-law; Dr. James (Lois) of St. Louis Missouri, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and loving nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his Lamacusa's lunch buddies; Harold, Gene, Angelo, Bob, Joe, Hilda, and Debbie.
He was preceded in death by his brothers; Joe, John, Sam, and Albert Battafarano.
Friends and family may call Monday November 25th from 4-7 P.M. at Schiavone Funeral Home in Youngstown. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, November 26th at St. Anthony of Padua Church.
The family is grateful for the care of the staff of Hospice House, Dr. Alma Garcia, Cindi, and Lisa, and caregivers; Dorothy, Karen, Slova, and Gloria. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512.
