YOUNGSTOWN ­ Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church,
4034 Williamson Ave. in Youngstown for Samuel Naples, 98, who died early
Monday morning at Hospice House in Boardman.
³Sam² was born Feb. 14, 1914, in Briar Hill (Youngstown¹s Little Italy), the
son of Ottaviano and Angelina Virgallito-DiNapoli, both of Colobraro Matera,
Italy.
He served in the Army during World War II as a Paratrooper and Medic with
the 511th Airborne Infantry and with Mac Arthurs Honor Guard in Japan. After
the war, he worked as a Scale Repairman for US Steel for 35 years, before
retiring in 1979.
Sam was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and camping with his
brothers, with his passion being golf, which he played until 1997 at the age
of 83. He also golfed in the US Steel League for over 30 years, and with the
Catholic War Veterans Post 1222.
Sam was also an active member of St. Stanislaus Parish, often acting as an
altar server and as the officer of the day and photo historian for the
Catholic War Veterans.
His wife, the former, Mary Helen Kukula (born Dec. 14), whom he married July
14, 1956, died Monday, April 14, 1997.
He is survived by his daughter, Caroline of Oceanside, Calif.; a son, Samuel
D. of Youngstown; two brothers, John Naples of Oceanside and Albert Naples
of Poland; and 28 nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters Rose DeFalco,
Madeline Segesto, Ann Nackino and Mary Sweeney; and two brothers, Daniel and
William Naples.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Schiavone Funeral Home, 1842
Belmont Ave., in Youngstown.
Calling hours will be Thursday, one hour before the funeral Mass at 10 a.m.
at the church.
The family requests that all donations be made to Hospice House or to the
Catholic War Veterans Post 1222.
