William James Lucarell, 102
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Patrick Church in Hubbard on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at 11:00 AM for William James Lucarell who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 5th surround by his loving family.
William was born in Youngstown on March 25, 1910, the son of Dominic and Philomena (Bruno) Lucarell.
He was a 1928 graduate of The Rayen School where he received the Willis Park Scholarship to attend The Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, he was selected to the electrical engineering honors society, Eta Kappa Nu, and the honorary professional signal corps fraternity, Pi Tau Pi Sigma. Later in 1962 he received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Youngstown (State) University.
On January 3, 1942 he married Carmel Catherine Fiordelise who passed away April 3, 1999.
It was at Westingthouse Electric Corporation on December 27, 1948 where he was knocked unconscious while working on a high-voltage transformer. Although badly burned, he was resuscitated by a co-worker. He spent six months near death in the hospital where doctors predicted that if he survived, he would be permanently disabled and unable to ever function normally. He defied all odds and upon recovering, went back to work the following year at the transformer plant until his retirement nearly 30 years later in 1975.
"Bill" was not only a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; he was an avid gardener, swimmer, sports fan, and investor. However, his greatest joy was taking an active role in the lives of his eleven grandchildren. He was their mentor; tutoring them in their studies and coaching them on their sports teams. He was also their biggest fan!
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Phyllis (Anthony) Cafaro of Vienna, with whom he made his home, sons Donald (Jane) of Farmdale and William (Jackie) of Girard, daughter-in-law, Cheryl Bolger Lucarell of Hubbard and ten grandchildren: Donald (Christine) Lucarell, William P. Lucarell, William E. (Joelle) Lucarell, William (Carol) Cafaro, Anthony (Gayle) Cafaro, Alyce (Marty) Cisine, Robert (Petrine) Lucarell, Jennifer (George) Swartz, Jill (Ralph) McFarland, and Tracy (Tom) Huber. He leaves fifteen great-grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Lucille Young, of Boardman and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers; Philip, Anthony, Angelo, Rocco and James, two sisters; Victoria White and Marie Young, his youngest son Robert J. (on July 5, 2012) and a grandson Jimmy Lucarell.
Visitation by family and friends will be one hour prior to the Mass at St. Patrick Church in Hubbard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that material contributions be made to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund by mail at 1801 Willamette St., Suite 200, Eugene, OR 97401 or online at www.fanconi.org.
