Carmel (Tinoco) Avila

A funeral service was held Friday, October 7, 2022, at 10:00am in Schiavone Funeral Home for Carmel Avila, 92, who passed away at home on October 4, 2022. Carmel was born in Girard on November 24, 1929, to her parents George and Anna Christopher Tinoco. She was a 1939 graduate of Girard High School and worked as a nurse’s aide for St. Elizabeth Hospital. After raising her family, Carmel retired from Hills Department Store as a sales associate. She enjoyed travelling, reading, and crossword puzzles but most of all she enjoyed her cats and dogs and teasing her family. Carmel loved watching Western Movies and Telenovelas. She will be forever remembered by her family as a sweet, loving, helpful soul. Carmel is survived by her children, Linda Avila of Pittsburgh, Sylvia (James) Berbigler of Kentucky, Bob (Lisa) Avila of Boardman, Michael Avila of Youngstown, Edward (Diane) Avila of West Virginia; her sister, Frances Tonoco Wilson of Girard; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nicolas Avila whom she married December 10, 1955, died July 11, 1992; her two sons, David, and Nicolas Avila; and her brother, Joseph Tonoco. Carmel was laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown.
