Obituary

On April 18, 2021 Leafy gained her heavenly wings at Austintown Health Center with her family by her side.

She was born on August 16, 1926, Leafy Elizabeth Huey in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Leafy attended Arcadia Elementary School and Indiana High School. Leafy was always proud of the fact she went to school with the famous actor Jimmy Stewart at Indiana High. After graduation she worked at the Paragon Defense Plant in Indiana making hand grenades. She came to Youngstown in 1955 and worked at the Brass Rail and Champion Restaurants. In 1958 she was hired by the Youngstown Board of Education and after 39 years, she retired in 1997.

After a short week of retirement, her favorite grandson (Mark) got her a new job at Manning’s Bakery. She worked there until 1999 when she received a call for help from her family in North Carolina. She then relocated to New Bern, NC to help care for her great grandson. In 2006, after her job in North Carolina was complete, she moved back to Youngstown. Once again, her grandson got her another job at St. Mark’s Catering. In 2010, she finally retired and spent the last years of her “retired” life at Meridian Arms Assisted Living Center. Leafy’s favorite passion was playing bingo and she also enjoyed playing cards and dominos with family and friends. Leafy was always ready to dance and loved her Handels’ Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream.

Leafy is survived by her daughter, Patricia Granchay of Canfield; her favorite grandchild, Mark Granchay (Ashlee) of Canfield who helped care for his grandmother for many years; a son, Edward Johnson and his wife Mary of New Bern, NC; their children, Kelli (Shane) Malone, Jeff (Opal) Johnson, and Timothy (Jennifer) Johnson, all of New Bern, NC. She leaves seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Leafy is survived by a sister, Bonnie (Edward) Pesce of Girard; two sisters –in-law, Gerry Huey of Youngstown and Peggy Huey of Freedom, PA. Leafy also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Leafy was preceded in death by her parents, Doyle and Ruth Fyock Huey; a son-in-law, John G. Granchay; three brothers, Clayton, Kenneth, and William; four sisters, Velma, Helen, Betty, and an infant sister; a sister-in-law, Betty Huey; and a brother-in-law, Lou Sheehe.
