Early Monday morning, May 13, 2019, was the death date of Mathew E. “Skip” Baker Jr., 78 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center Main. He died from complications following surgery. Skip was the son of Mathew and Helen Chmielewski Baker Sr. and was born Feb. 8, 1941 in Youngstown. After graduating from The Rayen School in 1959, he had a year of college and worked at Copperweld Steel as a supervisor retiring after 35 years of service. He was a member of Victory Christian Center, an avid player of golf, racket ball, bowling, and followed all Ohio sports including the Browns and Indians. With great comfort he was an organ donor; at death he contributed many organs and tissue. During the 60s he was honorably discharged from the United States Army. He is survived by his wife, the former Phyllis “Cookie” Greco whom he married Aug. 8, 1964; two daughters, Kim (Joe) Dascenzo and Melissa (Kevin) D’Amour; one son, Gregg (Laurie) Baker; and two grandchildren, Matt (Jenna) Dascenzo and Jennie Dascenzo along with many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Donna Baker. Per Skip’s request there will be no calling hours or services.
