Anthony “Tony” Crish, 95

Youngstown - Tony Crish passed away peacefully June 12, 2015 at Oasis Rehabilitation Center.  He was born on July 19, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio to parents Angelo and Angeline (Martone) Crish. He was one of 13 children who loved spending hours playing cards and sports on the farm and tending to the horses. Tony attended Chaney High and left his Junior year to play football at Polytech High. There, he caught the eye of the University of Oregon football recruiters.  He was a proud football player for the Ducks for two years before he pushed his studies aside and fought for his country as a Merchant Marine in WWII.  Upon his return to the states he donned his Ducks jersey for the next 3 years to become the “All time University of Oregon letter winner” lettering in baseball and football.  After he received his degree, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams.  However, his love of country prevailed and he decided to continue his service. As a Merchant Marine, he continued to travel the World as a Second Deck Officer in command and navigator for the Queen Elizabeth and other ships for 39 years.  Through his travels Tony loved to bring back many treasures for his beloved family from around the world.  A wonderful story teller, Tony recalled many stories of his service including being a member of the first ship to reach the Andrea Doria.  After retiring, he became a substitute teacher for the Youngstown City Schools where he was able to share his love of the Spanish language with his students.Tony was a proud family man and Westsider who enjoyed spending time with his brothers, sisters, neices, nephews, and Zitello cousins.  U.T. was an avid sports enthusiast who attended many niece and nephew’s games.  Often times you could find the “Ultimate Coach” taking notes throughout the games ever eager to share them with his novice athletes.A lover of current events, his letters to the editor often graced the pages of the Vindicator.  He also spent many late evenings playing cards with his siblings and cousins until he no longer stay awake to finish the game.He was preceded in death by his parents his brother Joe, Frank, and Sam; sisters Philomena Babick, Ursula Onesko, Blanche Dobrindt and Anita Mancino; as well as neices, nephews, and brother and sisters in law. He survived by sisters Frances Tomaskovich, Nancy Olsavsky, Amelia (David) Palombaro, Madelyn Krotky all of Youngstown and Mary (Dominic) Maimone of Akron as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and cousins who will miss him dearly.Friends and family may join us in celebrating his life for a viewing at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Church 1124 Turin Avenue followed by a church service at 11a.m.The family would like to extend a thank you to the loving and caring staff at Oasis Rehabilitation Center and a  special thank you for the amazing personal care provided by the staff at Crossroads Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Crossroads Hospice.
